Scalp Care

Invigorate + nourish your scalp

See healthier, thicker-looking hair with Rejuvenating Scalp Serum.

Start at the root—literally. From time to time, part your hair and see what’s going on up there.

Clarifying Shampoo clears away product buildup so your hair can soak up moisture better: a deep weekly clean that brings you back to neutral.

Without proper cleansing, that buildup can lead to clogged pores, dull, greasy strands and dandruff (no, thanks). On the flip side, over-washing or washing with a shampoo that’s too harsh can strip sebum from the scalp and cause major dryness.

The Rinse

Understand your hair type.

Scientifically speaking, your hair type (i.e., the texture and thickness of your strands) matters because it physically affects how quickly sebum spreads from your roots to ends (read: how quickly your hair gets oily). Generally, the curlier or coarser your hair, the less often you need to wash it. Here is a basic starting frequency for each hair type.

Dealing with damage (due to chemical treatments, heat styling, dyes, etc.)? Wash even less—damaged hair cuticles are extra fragile and need lots of TLC.

Turns Out, You Are Supposed To Clean Your Hair Brush Sometimes

Cleaning your hair brush probably isn’t at the top of your regular to-do list. We’re in the business of hair and most of our team confesses they’ve done this only a handful of times (if ever). Isn’t it enough to clean it every couple of months/years when we happen to notice it looks disgusting?

The short answer is no—you/we are kinda disgusting, apparently. Cleaning hair brushes regularly is the hygienic thing to do. Those bristles trap all sorts of ickiness—none of which are doing your hair any favors. Cleaning your brush improves its performance, extends its life and keeps your head healthy. (Plus, it’s super easy.) Here’s how to do it right so we can all stop being gross.

What’s the best way to clean your hair brush?

Why cleaning your hair brush is important

First, let’s take a look at your brush(es), shall we? Chances are there’s a bunch of shed hair in there (no surprise), but you may also spot some tiny grayish clumps stuck to the bristles or matted at the base. That stuff is actually a party of dead scalp skin, dandruff, sebum, product buildup, dust, debris and anything else that’s collected on your head or in your bathroom.

While all that buildup sits there, it creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast—especially if your brush spends most of its time in your damp, humid shower. What’s more, you end up brushing all that icky residue back into your clean hair.

Clear the hair after each use.

Remove any hair that’s accumulated in your brush with your fingers or a fine-tooth comb. Use small scissors to cut out tightly wound tangles.

Do a deep clean once a month-ish.

Wash your brush thoroughly to rid it of built-up residue. The more styling products you use, the more frequently you’ll want to wash.

You can opt for the “hands-on” method…

  1. Remove all the shed hair from your brush.
  2. Fill a bowl or sink with warm water. Add a few drops of shampoo (best) or soap (OK, too).
  3. Swish the bristle end of your brush in the water-shampoo solution to loosen buildup.
  4. Scrub away buildup using an old toothbrush.
  5. Once clean, rinse your brush well.
  6. Shake out excess water and let it dry on a clean towel, bristle-side down.

…or the “lazy” method:

Turns out, you can actually wash your brush in a dishwasher or washing machine cycle. (This method is for plastic brushes only, though; natural or wooden ones likely won’t survive.) Make sure to thoroughly remove any hair from the brush, which will protect the drain. Once the wash cycle is complete, remove your brush and let it dry, bristle-side down.

When should you replace your brush?

A good brush that’s properly cared for should last for years (even a lifetime!). As long as the bristles aren’t bent, broken or filthy beyond repair, you shouldn’t need to replace it. Wash it as often as you can—your hair and scalp will thank you!

Curl Defining Set

Thirsty curls and coils

Thirsty curls and coils should be cleansed with a gentle, moisturizing shampoo—that’s why we made our Curl Defining No-Lather Shampoo with chelating agents that are strong enough to pull out the bad stuff (pollutants, dirt) but gentle enough that they don’t remove the good (nourishing natural oils).

Then Curl Defining Cream brings hydrating, curl-defining, and frizz-control benefits for hair, and Curl Defining Foam finishes the set.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

Even among stylists and dermatologists (and the Odele team!), there’s no consensus on the ideal shampoo schedule. How often you choose to wash yours is a matter of hair type, lifestyle and personal preference. That said, it is possible to over-cleanse and under-cleanse, both of which can damage your hair.

  1. Pay attention to your scalp.

A healthy scalp should look clean and clear. But if your head’s itchy, flaky or sensitive, it could be a sign that you need to scale back (or step up) your shampoo routine. As sebum (the skin’s natural oil) builds up on the scalp, it traps dirt, sweat, dead skin cells… and pretty much whatever else is floating around you.

  2. Consider your styling habits.

The more gels, sprays, leave-ins or curl creams you put on your hair, the more diligent you’ll want to be about regularly cleansing to bust through any buildup. Braids, twists, weaves and extensions are great for giving your hair a break—just be sure to keep up with regular cleansing when you wear them.

  3. Don’t sweat a little sweat.

No surprises here: Sweat can spread sebum, trap dirt and lead to smelly hair. According to dermatologists, you actually don’t need to wash your hair after every sweat session. A quick rinse with water to wash away the salt can help hold you over until your next shampoo and keep you from drying out your mane.

  4. Adapt to your environment.

Everything from pollution to temperature can affect the state of your hair, so take into account where you live and the seasons you experience there, too. Dry air = drier hair, so you might benefit from washing less frequently. High heat and humidity can make the scalp feel oilier, and more frequent washing could be the solution. A good chelating shampoo can help purge your hair of pollutants.

  5. Know it can fluctuate with age and hormone levels.

Just as our skin care needs change with age, so do the needs of our hair and scalp. Your sebaceous glands (the ones that produce sebum) are controlled by hormones, so they may be more or less active depending on age. As we age and our hair loses pigment, those glands shrink and begin to produce less oil, causing the hair and scalp to become drier. So if you’re going gray, you may not need to shampoo as often as you used to.

Check in with your head. Do your hair and scalp look and feel healthy? If so, you’re probably washing often enough.

How To Keep Your Bathroom Clean And Organized

A thoughtfully organized bathroom can go a long way toward helping you keep your schedule (and sanity) intact. Whether you have the bathroom all to yourself or share it with a whole household, here are a few tips to tidy up today.

  1. Move it or lose it.

Pull everything out of your bathroom shelves, cupboards and drawers and onto the vanity or the floor. Then pretend you are packing for a week-long trip. Everything you packed gets a lovely, accessible home in the bathroom.

  2. Give more power to the drawers.

Drawer organizers are especially helpful in a bathroom to organize skin care products and makeup where there are a lot of little items floating around. Marie suggests saving boxes of various sizes to help compartmentalize your drawers without buying anything new. The boxes that come with small electronics are always particularly nice.

  3. Make your open shelving more, um, closed.

Use small baskets, pottery, jars, trays, boxes and storage containers to wrangle rogue shelf dwellers. For the products that are just too pretty to hide away, like our Air Dry Styler, consider using clear containers or open-weave baskets.

  4. Organize vertically.

Keep things accessible (or not) based on who will be using them and how often. If you have young children at home, give them their own lower shelf or drawer so that they can find their things without help from an adult.

  5. Share!

Our multitasking products are ungendered so you don’t need his, hers, theirs—you can share Odele with anyone who shares your hair type. Everything we make is safe for adults and kids.
